For breakfast, I always go to Gat Lebuh Cecil 1 to search for good food. For e.g. Ah Hong Curry Mee, Wilson’s Apom Balik and Ms Lim Fried Bee hon. Today, we are going to explore into more secret place near Gat Lebuh Cecil 1 for I Mum Mum Pan Mee (板面). It is located in the inner shop behind Li Yuen(丽圆茶室) Coffee shop at Gat Lebuh Cecil 1, Penang. From the main road, you can only found a small sign board that talks about this restaurant. You may only find it if you dare to explore. Here is how it looks like.

The restaurant is located at the center of the PDC flat where most of the shop lot is closed or abandon. It is kind of lonely restaurant where you will only return here if you try it before and want to try the Pan Mee again. I do return to this restaurant as they sell reasonable good Pan Mee.
What is Pan Mee?
Pan (板) means flat type of wood and Mee means noodle. By directly translation, Pan Mee mean flat type of noodle. You can imagine that the noodle is kind of similar to a long flat noodle.
In I Mum Mum , they serve the noodle in 3 different types. i.e
- big flat style (similar to a pc of leaf, right hand side of the picture below)
- Long flat style
- Spaghetti style (left hand side) It is kind of hard the see in detail in below picture.
The Dining Environment
The dinning setting is kind of simple where both the table and chair is made of plastic. Same goes to the chopstick and the spoon. We are sitting between the flat corridor and you do able to feel the strong wind that blow into the channel of the flat. This location is shaded from the sun as well, you will not sweat when dining there (only valid for breakfast, not for lunch).
The menu is kind of straight forward. It is just a pc of laminated paper. It has printing on both of the side. Picture below show the front page where you can select the various cooking choice of the Pan Mee. The price and the size of the selection is clearly label. Each selection come with a photo so that you will know what is the actual food that you getting upon ordered. On the Lower right is the noodle selection available to choose.

How does the food taste?
I have ordered the Pan Mee soup, big sized and big flat style. You can see that the noodle is kind of similar to a big flat sheet of wood panel.
The Pan Mee is being topped with fried anchovies, sweet leaf (树子菜) and black wood ear fungus as part of the main ingredient. These 3 items is the main topping ingredient that uses to prepare the dishes. Without it, this dish is just incomplete.
There is another secret ingredient that you will always found where you ordered the Pan Mee from any hawker still. It is the chili padi and quarter pc of lime. You will need to squeeze the lime juice into soup before you start the dining. The chili padi is very important and it will spice up the noodle to a new level. For me, chili padi is a must have for this dish.
My wife has ordered the dry version of Pan Mee with the long flat style noodle. It comes with some minced meat, fried anchovies and a quarter of lime. For the dry version, they did not provide the chili padi but instead they come along with some sambal which is more suitable for dry version of the noodle.
Long Flat style
Overall, the Pan Mee taste is above normal, that why their business able to sustain up until now even thought the restaurant location is not facing the main road. It is actually located in an isolated place where only return customer will appreciate they good food.
