Leong Chee Kee Biscuits Review

Leong Chee Kee Biscuits Review, 2.9 out of 5 based on 2 ratings

I got to known about Leong Chee Kee Biscuits Bakery shop (梁池记老饼家) when I was watching Ah Xian TV show. I did not pay a visit immediately as I am not sure where it is. I know that this bakery shop is located near Campbell Street but I did not remember there is any bakery shop along Campbell Street. Well, in September 2012, I and my wife have started the Honda Kiap (motorbike in Hokkien) food exploration into the heart of Georgetown in search for Leong Chee Kee Biscuits bakery shop.  Here is the map to the bakery shop.

If you are not local to Penang, you will never go to this place. It is not located along the main road but instead the shop is located off lebuh Cintra as shown above. When you take a detour from Lebuh Cintra, you may not able to find it easily as the shop is located at the far end corner of the people court apartment. You will need to walk along the walk way until the end before you can found it.  The front view of the shop is blocked by some tree and some small hut.  Well, with my Honda Kiap in place, this is not a problem.  Here is how the front views of the bakery shop.

This bakery shop was started the business since 1950+. It have > 60 years old of bakery history  and currently is owned by second generation owner, Mr. Leong How Keng.

The Environment

This is just a purely bakery shop without any dining table like star buck or Cofffee bean.  You will need to buy and go. The bakery shop is located at the ground floor of people court apartment. Total floor area is no more than 1000 square feet.  Entire shop lot is pack with some simple machine and the over for baking. Here is how it looks like.

All the cake in the bakery shop is hand made by the second generation owner Leong How Keng. Leong Chee Kee Biscuits only has 2 workers, first is the owner, Leong How Keng, the youngest son of Leong Chee Kee and the second is Leong How Keng’s wife. The UPH is of the production is extremely slow. The daily production is kind of low and you will need to come early to the shop to get the cake.

How does it taste?

Leong Chee Kee Biscuits is famous for its coconut tarts, but the sad story is; I did not order it nor tasted it. Instead of the coconut tart, I have tried their egg cakes (鸡蛋糕). There are 2 sized available. The smaller size is shape like a drop of wafer where as the bigger size is shape like flower with melon seeds sprinkled over the top. Here is how the actual product in Leong Chee Kee Biscuits bakery shops.

According to Mr. Leong, both of the egg cakes uses the same ingredients but the flower shape egg cakes is more famous compare to the smaller version.  The only different is that the flower shape cake is being baked for longer hours.

I have tasted both version of the egg cakes, and yes. The flower shape version do taste better and more solid feel. The cake is more solid and more fragrance. I do not know why this happen but it does. You should try the flower shape egg cakes!!

Will I come again?

Yes, definitely!!  I will try the coconut tarts and get more flower shaped egg cakes. The egg cakes tasted excellent!
